I simply just looked at these pics and derived a plan and built my jig. I used the free frame plans I got from the chopper handbook and this is what I came up with. All of the dimensions were rough and needed to be checked with actual fitment. I took me 5 years and 3 different jigs to get here. So put a price on that. I want to thank all the guys that posted pics. I never would have figured it out otherwise. If I have to explain it you wouldn't understand.

Almost finished with the custom conversion. Just need to wire in the new Dakota Digital speedo. The new Baker 6speed is set up for an electronic speedo. Last winter I did a S&S 96" motor kit and now this thing really moves.

Brand new part. Dyna rear brake bracket. Made in China. Axle wouldn't even go through. Only .050" off. Close enough I guess. Good thing I got the tools to fix it. This is an example of my two favorite sayings. "You get what you pay for." and "Pay now or pay later" This guy got both. He got the "right price" up front but had to pay later to make it right. The lesson here is Buy American.

Steve @ Jonz Customs builds some pretty cool stuff. This guy was really cool. He drove out from Colorado in this cool old Ford Econo van. It wes running hot and has to drive 55mph with the engine cover open.

Everything except the tires and rear belt was hand made or modified by John Reed in 1981, the bike was cleaned up in 2011. Belt drive in 1981? This bike is awesome by today's standards. It was a different playing field back then. There were no catalogs to order from. No internet. Very few magazines. 1981 come on! So many trick things on this bike I can't even remember. Did they have billet wheels in 81. I'm not sure I was in the 6th grade but I don't think so. The single sided swing arm? Wow! The hydraulic clutch and brake levers I really couldn't figure out. The masters were totally hidden. The exhaust was like out of formula F1 car or something. Friggen crazy amount of hours went into this bike. Timeless. This bike is ridiculously awesome. I was impressed to see it today and to think it was built 30 years ago.

It was a fun and gratifying three days. James is a super nice guy and didn't make me feel like I was under the gun. Everything turned out great.

We had a good time on Saturday. Small turn out, but it worked out good everyone had something to do. We had some new guys show up and they had a good time making the blister project Don had them work on. They all did a great job working the bag and mallet, using the Pexto rotatory tool turning the flange and finishing it off by hand planishing on the post dolly.

I have to thank Don for taking the lead this time. I had the "Triumph Project" customer at the shop helping me get some of the parts finalized. We also had a few of the regulars show up and get some more of the Sportster tank done. It's not finished but it got a little closer. It was great meeting the new guys and fun to catch up with the regulars. Hope to see you all come back for the next one.

The Baker traveling sales team stopped by a day early. That turned out great for me but bad for all my friends and customers that wanted to meet Bert. It was awesome getting one on one time with the mad scientist and transmission genius. The funny thing is we didn't even talk about transmissions. We did spend most of our time talking about the changing land scape of the motorcycle industry. Bert was kind enough to share his knowledge about marketing and advertizing, something I know vary little about. I'm just a gear-head trying to run a small business. I only recently discovered that this is as important as the mechanical skills that I have spent the past 20 years "trying" to master. All in all Bert and Mark are great guys and I hope to get to know them a little better. I want to thank Mark for seeing something in me that made him want to have Bert stop by and meet me and I want to thank Bert for spending the time to share his knowledge and give his insight on the industry that WE love so much.

Well I've been back for a week and I'm still stoked about the fun time I had at the BMR. The mountains of Tennessee are the prefect setting for a good old fashion bike run. The camp grounds were right on the Hiwasse river witch was nice for catching some trout for dinner, swimming and just hanging out with your feet in the water. The facilities were nice and the staff at the campgrounds were friendly. Thanks to Zinger for inviting me to ride with his group on Friday. I was able to ride with Kevin Baas, Warren Jr., Colleen Swartz and don't want to forget Bondo, Zinger, Willard and Ben. It was a blast riding behind Baas watching him carve up the twisties on the Knuck. Good times. Forgot the battery for the camera that day. Good thing Colleen was there.

I had a chance to chill with Chris Callen and Colleen. I thought it was really cool that he came over to thank me for coming out to support his event. I had meet Chris several times before but never had the time to really talk to him. He is a cool down to earth dude. It was interesting to here his vision for the future of the biker scene and motorcycle industry in general. He has a very positive outlook. Anyway I had a great time and would recommend this rally to anyone who is sick of the vendor swap meet atmosphere of the big mainstream rallies.

I found this link Googleing Texas Bike Works. Liam I know but I need to see what my advertising dollars are doing for me. I was surprised to see it. It was a while back but I got into an argument with a sales rep. that was telling me that the internet was not a viable form of advertising. He was trying to sell me ad space in the magazine but I was asking about there internet presence. At the time American Cycle didn't have a web site for whatever reason. I guess they got rid of that guy and hired someone that has a handle on what's been going on. Happy to see it. On a side note I met Tony Frey at the Rick Fairless in Dallas. Whey cool dude I hope he was the one to get thing going in the right direction.

Do you recognize that guy? It's Keith Richards from Pirates of the Caribbean. Keep in mind he did this twice. It looks identical on the other side tank but the mirror image. Insane.
You might not dig the style but the work is impeccable.

Crazy customers wishes but Shark delivered as expected. This guy is amazing. He has got to be the most under rated painter in the business. He can paint anything. If you can think it up he can paint it. This is just one of his paintings. I will try to post more of his work in the future. If anyone is interested???

Don and I worked on this job for 12 hours. Finally got close but didn't hit the mark. The customer would not let us anneal the piece as he was afraid of the finish. Big mistake. The piece could be refinished. Live and learn. It cost me and Don many hours and the customer did not sympathize with us and paid us nothing.

The seal would not come out because of the Yamabond. Cuz you know they will leak if you don't glue them in with a permanent sealer. But the sealer is a waist if you don't put them in correct. It's funny both sides weren't even done the same. But they both had pleanty of sealer. Man they'll let anyone work on these things. This reminds me of something my friend Pat would say in this situation. " So you want to be a Harley mechanic ?"

Incorrect. Upside down. "I just had this fixed and it still leaks. Something must be wrong with the fork tubes." Ugh... no some dumb ass put the seal in upside down.

Jack shaft assembly welded in. 260mm tire. 1 1/8 x 132T belt. Still need to weld in the chain tensioner. The shaft will be threaded on each end and have nuts to keep it all together.

TEXAS BIKE WORKS, LLC INTRODUCES RetroFrames ^TM line of vintage Old-School and unique Fusion chopper frames to chopper builders.

The specific Old-School frame shown integrates vintage 1970s small-diameter tubular members with modern-era Sportster motors (1986-2003). The Century Rocket frame is constructed of rugged, 0.120”- wall, AISI 1020 DOM tubing, having 1” frame rails with a 1-1/2” backbone and seat post. Also features a 6” forward x 2” up-stretch x 38-degree rake. This configuration takes a +4 over fork assembly. The frames are set up for acceptance of chain-driven 130mm tires. They are all TIG welded in our patent pending rotisserie style fixtures. This allows the frame to be completely welded in the jig then stress relieved and fixture cooled which minimizes distortion and maintains accuracy.

RetroFrames^TMare computer-engineered in SolidWorks CAD software, followed by a corresponding stress/strain-field finite-element-analysis (FEA) performed in COSMOSWorks. FEA graphically depicts the field distributions throughout the frame design – enhancing TBW’s quality assurance goal geared toward top road performance and safety.

Stripped pulley Part 1

I removed the pulley and found that the inner race had walked inward. This is what happens when the drive belt is over tightened. That's probably what caused the pulley to come loose and wear out the splines. The pulley nut had lots of red lock tight and was still in place.
Notice a few splines missing on the left pulley.
The inner race has walked inward. The tool will not fit behind the race.
I ground a slot on each side with my cut off wheel. You need to be careful not to cut too deep.
This will allow the tool to fit so the race can be removed.
